If you know me you might know my first thought in the morning is “How can I sneak in some sort of comfy athletic wear (usually spandex) into my workwear?” I imagine that many of the working men and women out there share my feelings in wanting to get out of those stiff blazers, pencil skirts, dress pants and ties as soon as humanly possible.
So, I’ve compiled a list of tips on how you can strip off those uncomfortable layers, while still looking acceptable and professional in the office.
Tips for Women:
- Layers are key!!
- Wearing a skirt? Throw on a pair of spandex shorts under your skirt. Not only will you prevent any wardrobe malfunctions, but you’ll be able to strip and go….straight to the gym!
- Stock up on basic tank tops that are made with an athletic fabric. If you already own one, wear it under your blouse. These are perfect for any indoor exercise, and you’ll thank me for the extra warmth in the winter months.
- Incorporate your kicks
- Runners are in, especially ones that compliment your outfit. Check out the photos above to see some great ways you can get away with wearing sneakers in the office.
- Athletic tops can be work chic
- Keep your eyes peeled for athletic tops that you can wear with pencil skirts, or graphic tees you can wear under your favorite blazer. See photos for a good reference point.

Tips for Men:
- Athletic clothes aren’t just for working out anymore.
- There are a few new clothing companies that have great lines of men’s pants which are so versatile you can wear them to work and go for a hike comfortable in the same day. Sweat-wicking fabric make these pieces worthwhile. There’s also a great blazer out there that is perfect for the office and water resistant (check out image above).
- Sneakers can be office friendly
- Pick up a pair of 2-in-1 shoes that are office appropriate and won’t muck up the gym floor. Designers have produced some awesome oxford runners that are super cool and Complex has created a list of office trendy sneakers to help inspire you (see photos above).
Truth be told, I can’t count the number of times I’ve walked home at the end of a workday and gone straight to the gym. After removing only a few layers of clothing people often think I’m ready for the gym, not my office job – I think I’m ok with that.
Happy styling!
